Giving top priority to the development of transport and communication infrastructure across the southwestern and northern regions of Bangladesh, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has issued strict directives to accelerate the execution of three major national projects: the 2nd Padma Bridge, 2nd Jamuna Bridge, and the Padma Barrage.
The Prime Minister delivered these instructions during a high-level review meeting held on Tuesday afternoon at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Bangladesh Secretariat, attended by senior officials from relevant ministries, divisions, and engineering agencies. Assistant Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Abdullah Al Mahmud Shahriar, briefed the media on the outcome of the meeting.
The feasibility studies for both the 2nd Padma Bridge and 2nd Jamuna Bridge are currently underway. Final decisions regarding site selection, engineering blueprints, and total project costs will be finalized following the completion of these studies in September next year.
Detailed discussions were held regarding a proposed Y-shaped connecting alignment for the 2nd Padma Bridge. Once constructed, the bridge will significantly enhance connectivity between the southwestern region and Dhaka, while creating a robust alternative trade corridor linking the Mongla Sea Port as well as the Benapole and Darshana land ports.
The 2nd Jamuna Bridge aims to revolutionize transport and freight logistics for Rangpur and the broader northern region. Concurrently, the multi-purpose Padma Barrage project will address dry-season water scarcity, boost agricultural yield, stabilize river flow, protect the ecological balance of the Rooppur and Sundarbans belts, and incorporate a road link across the barrage structure itself.
