Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has stepped down from his post, citing personal health issues. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad officially accepted the resignation letter at 5:01 PM today at the Parliament, confirmed the President’s Press Secretary, Md Sarwar Alam.
“I am suffering from various health complications,” Shahabuddin stated when asked about the reason for his decision, adding, “I have nothing more to add at this moment.”
The resignation follows widespread media reports regarding a phone conversation between Shahabuddin and ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his visit to London for medical treatment from May 9 to May 18. Sheikh Hasina has been living in exile in India since August 2024.
