Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in a mass uprising, has no possibility of returning to Bangladesh within the next 10 years, stated National Parliament Speaker Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
The Speaker made these critical remarks while interacting with local journalists at the Bhola Circuit House on Thursday morning, discussing the country’s contemporary political landscape and imperative electoral reforms.
Electoral Misconduct Under Past Regime: Speaker Hafiz noted that the previous government had cultivated a political and electoral atmosphere where it was virtually impossible for honest, qualified, and neutral individuals to participate in or win elections.
Electoral System Reforms & Merit-Based Criteria: Emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of the current electoral framework, the Speaker stressed: “Instead of prioritizing wealthy candidates, we must establish a democratic environment that ensures participation for individuals who hold genuine popularity and social acceptance within the community.”
Outlook on Upcoming Local Elections: Speaker Hafiz expressed strong optimism that the government and Parliament are actively working toward ensuring that all upcoming local government elections across various tiers are conducted in a completely free, fair, and impartial manner.
