Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman acknowledged yesterday that his party is “not a party of angels,” emphasizing that its leaders and activists are human and capable of making mistakes or committing offenses.
Speaking as the chief guest at the Dhaka District Jamaat-e-Islami’s half-yearly members’ (Rukon) conference at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) auditorium, Shafiqur called for public accountability and internal vigilance.
“We are human beings, and we make mistakes. We have made it clear that wrongdoing and Jamaat-e-Islami cannot go together. But that does not mean we never do anything wrong. We make mistakes, we commit offences and crimes,” he said.
He urged patriotic citizens to report any misconduct involving party members, adding: “We promise that we will correct it.”
Zero Tolerance on Moral Misconduct
The Ameer’s remarks follow the expulsion of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam from Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday, following a social media video investigation that revealed evidence of “moral misconduct.” The party’s central executive council formally notified the Election Commission of the decision shortly after.
