Acclaimed South Korean director Na Hong-jin’s highly anticipated sci-fi survival thriller ‘HOPE’ has stormed the South Korean box office immediately upon release.
According to data released by the Korean Film Council’s box office tracking service, KOBIS, the film single-handedly commanded an impressive 66.62% share of the total weekend box office revenue between July 17 and July 19. Over those three days alone, the blockbuster generated $11.3 million, drawing 1,504,019 moviegoers to theaters. To date, the film has amassed a cumulative gross of $16 million with total admissions reaching 2,129,723 viewers.
Ending a Decade-Long Hiatus
Renowned for his mastery in crafting mystery, violence, and intense psychological tension in Korean cinema, Na Hong-jin stands in a league of his own. Following critically acclaimed and commercially successful films such as The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, and The Wailing, the visionary filmmaker took a decade-long hiatus from feature-length directing. Released after his 2016 hit The Wailing, ‘HOPE’ officially marks the master director’s long-awaited return.
A Star-Studded International Ensemble
A major catalyst for global interest in the film is its stellar ensemble cast. Alongside South Korea’s top-tier actors—Hwang Jung-min, Jo In-sung, and Squid Game breakout star Jung Ho-yeon—the film features prominent Hollywood actors, including Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton.
From Cannes to New York: Global Acclaim
Even prior to its theatrical release, ‘HOPE’ created significant buzz on the international festival circuit. Last May, the film made its debut in the main Competition section at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and was subsequently selected as the Centerpiece film at the New York Asian Film Festival.
Distributor NEON has acquired the North American rights for the film. NEON has earned a reputation in the industry for successfully handling North American releases for internationally celebrated and Oscar-winning films, including Parasite, Anatomy of a Fall, and Anora.
