In a major move to combat AI-generated fake profiles, Meta has officially launched Facebook Verified—a free identity verification badge designed to confirm that an account belongs to a real person through a video selfie check.
The new feature allows eligible Facebook users to verify their identity by recording a short video selfie, which Meta’s system then cross-references with their existing profile photos to confirm a match. Meta stated that the entire verification process is completely free of charge and typically takes just a few minutes to complete.
Blue vs. Black Badge: Key Differences
To differentiate between its offerings, Meta has established clear distinctions between its existing paid subscription and the new free feature:
| Feature | Meta Verified (Paid) | Facebook Verified (Free) |
| Badge Color | Blue | Black |
| Cost | Paid monthly subscription | Free of charge |
| Method | Official ID verification & paid perks | Quick video selfie check |
| Process | Recurring subscription model | One-time completion process |
Once users complete the video selfie verification, the black badge will automatically display across supported areas of the Facebook platform.
Tackling the Rise of AI Impersonation
The rollout comes at a critical juncture as rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have made it increasingly effortless for bad actors to generate convincing fake profiles, hyper-realistic images, and deceptive automated messages. By introducing a frictionless, selfie-based verification system, Meta aims to restore user trust and provide a quick way for real humans to authenticate their digital presence.
