Mobarok Hossain Imon, alias ‘David Imon’—a top terrorist based in Chattogram—had struck a deal worth 20,000 Indian Rupees with a human trafficker to cross into India via the Benapole border in Jhashore. However, his escape plan failed when he and three associates were intercepted at a police checkpoint in Jhashore early Wednesday (July 29).
A joint team of Jhashore Kotwali Police and the Detective Branch (DB) arrested Imon and his companions from the Jhumjhumpara area in Jhashore Sadar.
The three arrested associates have been identified as Al Islam Alif Tamal (25), Md. Shamim (28), and Md. Safayet Hossain.
Addressing the operation, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime & Operations) of Jhashore District Police, Md. Mirajul Islam, stated that based on specific intelligence provided by Chattogram District Police, nine police teams conducted a joint raid and intercepted a black Honda CR-V (SUV). Imon’s identity was subsequently confirmed after cross-checking photographs and official records.
To evade law enforcement surveillance, the group was traveling in an SUV registered under ‘Dhaka Metro-Gha 15-3590’. The vehicle is registered to Md. Awal Hossain, owner of ‘Hope Textiles’ located in Dhaka’s Banani area. An official from Chattogram District Police revealed that one of the three arrested associates is a nephew of the vehicle’s owner.
Upon his arrest, Imon attempted to mislead investigators by falsely identifying himself as ‘Miraj’ and claiming to reside permanently in Dhaka.
Speaking to journalists in the afternoon, Additional DIG of Chattogram Range, Nazimul Haq, stated:
“Facing intense police operations, Imon attempted to cross over to India. He holds two passports, including a foreign one, and frequently crossed the border into India. A detailed interrogation process is currently underway.”
According to police sources, David Imon hails from Kanchan Nagar in the Fatikchhari Upazila of Chattogram. He functioned as the second-in-command for Boro Sajjad, another top terrorist from Chattogram currently hiding in India.
With ‘Chhota Sajjad’ (alias Sajjad Hossain)—who previously led the gang—currently in prison, Imon and his accomplice Mohammad Raihan Alam took charge of managing extortion rackets and armed criminal activities across Chattogram city, Raujan, Hathazari, and Fatikchhari upazilas.
Investigators noted that Imon and his syndicate were recently implicated in several major violent incidents and extortion schemes:
Attack on DDN Office: On July 13, a group of 30 to 35 armed terrorists led by David Imon carried out a sudden attack and vandalized the office of ‘Digital Dot Net’ (DDN), an internet service provider on the Chandanpura-Bakalia Access Road.
Extortion Demand of BDT 2 Crore: Two days prior to the attack, DDN owner Adil Bin Mamun received a call from an international number where the caller identified himself as ‘David Imon’, demanding a one-time extortion payment of BDT 2 crore alongside a monthly fee of BDT 10 lakh.
Firing at Industrialist’s Residence: Shots were fired at the residence of Mujibur Rahman, Director of Smart Group, on January 2 and February 28, despite police presence. Investigators confirmed Imon’s direct involvement in the intimidation attempts following a failure to collect extortion money.
Earlier in the week, Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) arrested two close associates of David Imon—Md. Asif (25) and Saidul Islam alias Arif (24)—from the Oxygen-Kuaish area, recovering a foreign pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
