The 11-Party Alliance has expressed strong condemnation and indignation over the terrorist attack on the National Citizen Party (NCP) convoy in Habiganj, as well as the subsequent police obstruction preventing the party’s top leaders from participating in scheduled political programs.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday (July 29) night, Hamidur Rahman Azad, Coordinator of the Alliance and Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, voiced this condemnation.
The statement highlighted that on Tuesday evening, while returning from the ‘July Long March-2026’ program in Habiganj, a planned attack and extensive vandalism were carried out against the convoy carrying senior NCP leadership.
Hamidur Rahman Azad alleged in the statement that while en route to a protest program organized on Wednesday to denounce Tuesday’s assault, the top NCP leadership once again faced police interference. Police intercepted senior party leaders—including Opposition Chief Whip and NCP Convener Nahid Islam—at various locations, including Sreemangal in Moulvibazar, under the pretext of imposing Section 144.
Terming the role of the police as a grave violation of fundamental and democratic rights, he stated:
“Democracy provides an open platform to address political arguments. If there is disagreement with any statement, it must be countered politically, not through violence. Having failed to confront the opposition politically, the government has unleashed party thugs against opposition leaders and activists.”
On behalf of the 11-Party Alliance, the statement strongly demanded the immediate identification and prosecution of those involved in the attack and vandalism against the NCP leaders in Habiganj.
Furthermore, alliance leaders urged law enforcement agencies to uphold the fundamental rights of citizens and refrain from placing unwarranted obstacles in front of peaceful and democratic opposition programs in the future.
