Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Opposition Chief Whip, has claimed that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has demonstrated extreme failure in leading both his party and the country. He warned that if the administrative and political instability continues, the current government will be unable to complete its full tenure.
Nahid Islam made these comments to reporters on Friday evening (July 31) after visiting the National Institute of Ophthalmology in Agargaon, Dhaka, to check on the condition of NCP activist Alif, who lost an eye in a political attack in Habiganj.
Speaking with journalists, the top NCP leader expressed severe indignation over the deterioration of law, order, and public safety across the country:
Targeted Attacks & Impunity: Despite broad-daylight assaults on opposition political activists, the government has failed to take any effective administrative or legal action against the perpetrators.
Suppression of Dissent: Accusing the government of deliberately quashing opposition voices, he stated that it is impossible to stay in power indefinitely while disregarding the public mandate and ground realities.
Nahid Islam strongly opposed Petrobangla’s recent initiative to raise the prices of compressed natural gas (CNG) used in electricity generation and public transportation to offset subsidy pressures.
He warned that if this proposal—which would place a crushing financial burden on ordinary citizens and the transport sector—is implemented, the NCP will announce a siege of the Petrobangla office as part of a fierce protest movement.
