The Argentine Football Association (AFA) is in no rush regarding the retirement of football icon Lionel Messi. AFA President Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia clarified that as long as one of the world’s greatest footballers wants to enjoy playing, the nation wishes to see him at ease on the pitch. The authority to decide when to step down from the national team rests entirely with Messi alone.
Tapia shared these insights during a recent Argentine television broadcast while discussing Messi’s future plans and his role within the national team.
Much like his campaign in 2022, Messi delivered top-tier performances to guide Argentina to the final of the 2026 World Cup, though they ultimately fell 1-0 to Spain in extra time. With Messi now past 39, questions have surfaced across the football community regarding a potential appearance at the 2030 World Cup.
By 2030, Messi will be 43 years old. Outside of goalkeepers, the record for the oldest outfield player in World Cup history is held by Cameroon’s Roger Milla (42 years and 39 days). Meanwhile, Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo competed in the 2026 World Cup at age 41. However, AFA President Tapia emphasized that rather than fueling speculation about 2030, the primary focus should simply be enjoying Messi’s presence on the pitch right now.
