The surge of childhood measles across Bangladesh continues to escalate at an alarming rate. Over the past 24 hours, four more children lost their lives to suspected measles symptoms, while 1,159 new pediatric cases were detected nationwide. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed these figures in a press bulletin released on Friday (August 14).
According to the DGHS, all four casualties recorded in the last 24 hours were categorized as suspected measles deaths. Among the 1,159 newly identified infections, 187 cases were laboratory-confirmed, while 972 were classified as suspected cases based on clinical presentations.
DGHS surveillance data indicates that over 122,000 children have required hospitalization for severe measles complications over the past five months, resulting in 894 fatal outcomes. Geographically, Dhaka Division remains the epicenter of the outbreak, reporting the highest number of cases and fatalities, followed by Rajshahi, Chittagong, Khulna, Barisal, Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions.
Medical experts emphasize that missed routine immunizations—specifically the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine—combined with baseline childhood malnutrition have exacerbated disease severity and transmission dynamics. Public health authorities are urging immediate catch-up vaccination drives in high-risk zones, alongside ensuring adequate hospital bed capacity and distribution of therapeutic Vitamin A supplementation.
