English giants Liverpool launched their new UEFA Champions League campaign with a thrilling comeback victory on opening night, defeating Spanish powerhouse Atlético Madrid 2–1 at a packed Anfield.
The visitors stunned the home crowd in the 17th minute when Marcos Llorente capped off a swift attack with a clinical finish to put Atlético ahead. Absorbing the early setback, Arne Slot’s side gradually asserted control over the tempo and drew level in the 40th minute courtesy of a fine finish from Dominik Szoboszlai. Just five minutes into the second half (50th minute), Alexis Mac Allister sealed the match with a moment of individual brilliance—unleashing a thunderous long-range rocket from outside the penalty box that flew past the goalkeeper and sent Anfield into celebration. Liverpool held their lead through the closing stages to lock in all three points.
