Chinese President Xi Jinping has proposed leading the creation of a unified “Open-Source AI Zone” for BRICS member states. Speaking on the second day of the annual BRICS Summit in New Delhi, the Chinese leader outlined the major initiative aimed at expanding tech collaboration, as confirmed by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Chinese artificial intelligence firms have increasingly developed globally competitive open-source AI models, allowing programmers and developers to freely modify and deploy code based on customized requirements. In contrast, US-based technology corporations maintain proprietary closed-source policies. Highlighting this strategic divergence, President Xi expressed optimism about establishing an “open ecosystem” across the BRICS bloc to counteract Western tech restrictions.
According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, the proposed framework encompasses the joint development of Large Language Models (LLMs), practical applications, cross-border technology sharing, and specialized AI research and training programs. President Xi also called for a comprehensive, consensus-based global AI governance framework. The initiative comes ahead of a anticipated bilateral meeting between Xi and US President Donald Trump later this month, where analysts expect AI safety, risk mitigation, and global governance to feature prominently on the agenda. Following the conclusion of summit sessions, both President Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin have departed India.
