The quarterfinal match of the Bangladesh women’s cricket team against China was officially declared abandoned due to persistent heavy rainfall and an unplayable outfield. However, under tournament bylaws, Bangladesh secured a direct berth in the semifinals of the 2026 Asian Games women’s cricket event by virtue of their superior international T20I ranking compared to opponents China.
The fixture was scheduled to take place on Thursday morning (September 17, 2026) at the stadium in Nagoya, Japan.
Although fresh rain stopped falling over Nagoya on Thursday morning, heavy downpours over preceding days left the pitch and outfield completely waterlogged and dangerous for player safety. Scheduled to commence at 9:00 AM local time, umpires were unable to conduct even the toss.
Evaluating player safety and ground conditions, umpires conducted three rigorous inspections of the field. Following an extended wait, with the outfield failing to dry sufficiently, officials formally called off the match around 12:00 PM.
Under rules set by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Asian Games Cricket Committee, if a knockout or quarterfinal match is abandoned, the team holding the higher ICC T20I ranking automatically advances to the next stage. Positioned significantly higher than China on the international T20I points table, the red-and-green squad led by Captain Nigar Sultana Joty officially confirmed their semifinal ticket.
Notably, similar ranking rules were applied during the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, under identical inclement weather conditions. Bangladesh is anticipated to face India in their upcoming semifinal encounter.
