England’s express paceman Mark Wood has officially announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket. Following persistent knee injuries and direct medical advice, the 36-year-old speedster decided to draw the curtain on a decorated 11-year international career.
Wood communicated his decision through an official statement released by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Tuesday (September 22, 2026).
In an emotional farewell statement, Wood explained that strict medical guidelines regarding ongoing joint stress meant he could no longer sustain the physical demands of long-format Test or ODI red and white-ball cricket.
“The stats might not say I was the best bowler history has ever seen, but I hope my teammates remember that every time I walked onto that pitch, I gave 100 percent of myself,” Wood reflected.
Since making his international debut in 2015, Mark Wood has been a central pillar of England’s fast-bowling unit. Despite battling recurring injury setbacks, his ability to consistently clock speeds exceeding 150 km/h made him a formidable threat to top-order batters worldwide. His raw pace was instrumental in England winning the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup on home soil and the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
While stepping away from the international stage, Wood signaled his intention to continue playing domestic cricket and franchise leagues worldwide, including the Indian Premier League (IPL).
