A Dhaka court has flatly rejected the bail application of Azan Ali, who was arrested in connection with the fatal hit-and-run death of 24-year-old construction worker Mehedi Hasan in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone. Judge Md. Abdul Moktadir of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 issued the order on Sunday afternoon (October 4, 2026) following arguments from both defense and prosecution counsel.
During the hearing, State Prosecutor Mohammad Sharif Uddin Mamun strongly opposed the bail prayer, while defense counsel Golam Mostafa Khan argued that Azan Ali was not behind the steering wheel at the time of the collision.
After reviewing statements from both sides alongside initial CCTV footage of the incident, Judge Md. Abdul Moktadir delivered strict observations regarding road safety and equal justice:
Evidentiary Weight of CCTV Footage: The court noted that CCTV footage clearly showed Azan Ali exiting the vehicle at the scene, making it impossible to deny his presence at the site of the crash.
Risk of Sending the Wrong Signal: In his observation, the judge stated: “Granting bail at this stage in such a grave and tragic incident would send a terrible message to society—suggesting that one can commit such a serious crime or drive recklessly and escape accountability easily. This would indulge crime and allow affluent classes to view our legal and judicial system as light and trivial.”
Main Accused Remains at Large: The fatal accident took place on Road No. 1 of the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone on the afternoon of September 23, 2026. Following the death of Mehedi Hasan, the victim’s brother, Moktadir Islam, filed a case at Gulshan Police Station. The primary accused and driver of the car, Akash Marak, remains at large as police continue tracking his whereabouts.
