In a decisive move to rid Chittagong’s hilly Jangal Salimpur area of crime and land grabbing while bringing it under formal administrative control, the Government of Bangladesh has announced a comprehensive transformation plan. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmad announced the establishment of a modern police academy modeled after the historic Sardah Police Academy in Jangal Salimpur, alongside the relocation of Chittagong Central Jail to a 72-acre plot adjacent to the Bayid Link Road.
The Minister shared these key decisions at the Secretariat following a high-level review meeting on infrastructure development and security management for Jangal Salimpur.
Major policy decisions and strategic measures finalized by the Ministry of Home Affairs include:
Second National Police Academy: Land identification and site surveys are underway to construct a premier regional police training academy in Chittagong, built on the lines of the legendary Sardah Police Academy in Rajshahi.
Chittagong Central Jail Relocation: To reduce urban congestion and modernize penal infrastructure, 72 acres of land have been acquired near the Bayid Link Road to facilitate the relocation of Chittagong Central Jail.
Humane Rehabilitation for Illegal Settlers: Recognizing that many residents were unlawfully settled under the influence of local political circles, the Minister assured that structured rehabilitation programs will be executed to resettle displaced families appropriately.
Permanent Presence of Security Forces: To establish lasting rule of law, permanent land allocations have been made for the Bangladesh Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Armed Police Battalion (APBn) to construct administrative and operational bases.
Army Camps and Surveillance at Rohingya Camps: Alongside diplomatic pushes for Rohingya repatriation with international aid, two new Army camps are being established to curb drug smuggling and armed gang violence inside refugee camps. Furthermore, damaged perimeter fences will be repaired and CCTV surveillance will be expanded.
