Gold and silver prices have seen a sharp surge in the domestic market today, Thursday. The price of high-quality 22-karat gold has increased by BDT 9,856 per bhori, with the new rates taking effect at 10:00 AM today.
The Bangladesh Jewelers Association (BAJUS) announced the price adjustment through a press release, attributing the rate hike to an increase in the price of pure (tejabi) gold in the local market. Previously, gold prices were revised downwards on July 31.
Under the newly adjusted rates, the updated prices for various grades of gold and silver are as follows:CategoryPrevious Price (per Bhori)New Price (per Bhori)22-Karat GoldBDT 2,23,074BDT 2,32,93021-Karat GoldBDT 2,13,043BDT 2,22,49118-Karat GoldBDT 1,82,950BDT 1,91,056Traditional GoldBDT 1,49,474BDT 1,56,06422-Karat Silver—BDT 4,89821-Karat Silver—BDT 4,666
VAT Structure and Global Market Context
Gold prices in the country reached an all-time high on January 29 this year, when a single-day jump of BDT 16,213 brought the price per bhori to BDT 2,86,000.
Regarding taxation on jewelry purchases, BAJUS clarified that since VAT is already integrated into the pricing structure, jewelry outlets will not collect separate VAT from buyers. In the budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year, a fixed VAT of BDT 2,500 per bhori was set for gold jewelry, replacing the previous 5% ad valorem rate on total value.
Meanwhile, according to GoldPrice.org, global spot market prices also edged higher. As of 11:45 AM today, international gold prices rose by nearly $15 from yesterday to reach $4,260 per ounce.
