Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered the immediate transfer of imprisoned former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to a hospital due to deteriorating health conditions. According to media reports from international outlets such as Al Jazeera, a three-member judicial bench directed authorities to move Khan to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within two days.
This court ruling marks the first time since his incarceration in August 2023 that Imran Khan will remain outside prison for an extended period to undergo specialized medical treatment.
Imran Khan’s defense counsel, Uzair Bhandari, confirmed to the media that the apex court delivered this verdict after addressing long-standing health concerns raised by Khan’s family and legal team. While previous petitions to transfer Khan to a medical facility were rejected twice, the Supreme Court’s direct intervention secured the necessary authorization.
The court’s stringent and specific safeguards regarding the PTI leader’s health security have brought significant relief to his family, party members, and supporters. Political analysts observe that Imran Khan’s hospitalization and reinstated family access through the upcoming September 16 hearing will carry substantial weight in Pakistan’s ongoing political landscape.
