Two United Nations peacekeepers were killed and seven others wounded when a regular patrol of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) was ambushed by unidentified gunmen.
The attack took place on Monday (August 24) while the patrol unit was traveling toward the Pajut area in eastern Jonglei State.
Demand for Investigation: UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric emphasized that the ambush was a deliberate attack. The UN has called for an immediate and impartial investigation to bring those responsible to justice, noting that attacks against UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law. Risks to Humanitarian Personnel: UNMISS highlighted the escalating security challenges in South Sudan, noting that at least 36 humanitarian workers have lost their lives in the country since January.
