Midst mounting geopolitical tensions with Western powers over the Ukraine war, Russian President Vladimir Putin has established a stark new military red line. Moscow is fully prepared to deploy “all types of weaponry”—including nuclear arms—should a direct attack be launched against Kaliningrad, Russia’s strategic exclave bordered by NATO members Poland and Lithuania.
President Putin issued the warning to Western leadership while addressing world affairs at the prestigious annual Valdai Discussion Club forum in Moscow.
The Kremlin cited recent large-scale NATO military maneuvers in the Baltic Sea and escalating Western posture as severe security concerns for Russia.
President Putin explicitly stated: “If there is a direct attack on the Russian Federation, particularly on Kaliningrad or any other territory, the use of all types of weapons in our arsenal will inevitably come to the fore. This cannot be avoided.”
In late September, Moscow issued warnings against any attempts to blockade Kaliningrad by air or sea. Putin noted that continuous NATO drills and attempts to disrupt Russian commercial and military maritime transit in the Baltic Sea are rapidly deteriorating regional stability.
The Russian leader asserted that Russia harbors no intentions or plans to launch military campaigns against any European nation. However, he emphasized that if any Western power strikes Russian sovereignty, a full-scale military retaliation is absolute.
