Global football icon Cristiano Ronaldo (CR7) has been handed a 30-day suspension and a financial fine by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus and his unauthorized departure from the national team camp during the UEFA Nations League. The FPF Disciplinary Council officially confirmed the disciplinary measures in a press release issued on Monday (October 19, 2026).
Along with the temporary ban, Ronaldo was fined €255 for violating the national team’s internal code of conduct.
Disagreement & Departure in Copenhagen: The conflict began earlier this month during a UEFA Nations League match against Norway, where Ronaldo remained on the bench for the entire fixture. Alleging that head coach Jorge Jesus had failed to honor a promise to bring him on as a substitute, Ronaldo abruptly left the team’s training camp in Copenhagen ahead of their subsequent fixture against Denmark.
Code Violation & Scope of Ban: The FPF Disciplinary Council ruled that Ronaldo intentionally breached team discipline guidelines. However, the official statement left open whether the 30-day suspension applies exclusively to international duties or extends to club appearances.
Ronaldo’s Remorse & Apology: Following his departure, Ronaldo publicly expressed remorse and apologized to his teammates and supporters. Acknowledging his error, he stated that he is prepared to accept any disciplinary action and looks forward to returning to the national squad once the ban is served.
Federation Stance: FPF President Pedro Proença noted that once the disciplinary period concludes and internal matters are resolved, the federation will gladly welcome Ronaldo back to the national team setup.
