Fresh clashes broke out between activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir outside the Government Alia Madrasah in the capital on Tuesday (August 4). Starting around 5:15 PM, the two groups engaged in repeated chases, counter-chases, and heavy brick-batting, leaving several individuals injured.
Tensions between the two student organizations escalated across two major educational institutions in Old Dhaka throughout the day:
Fallout from Jagannath University Incident: The unrest originated Tuesday morning at Jagannath University following a clash between Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir over participation in an event commemorating the second anniversary of the July Uprising. The altercations quickly triggered severe tension on the Alia Madrasah campus.
Initial Afternoon Clash: Tensions boiled over around 3:00 PM when both factions engaged in their first wave of chases and counter-chases outside Alia Madrasah. Several people were injured, and traffic on adjacent roads came to a complete standstill for nearly two hours before temporarily easing.
By 5:15 PM, the situation spiraled out of control again as both groups re-engaged in fierce clashes. According to eyewitnesses, activists took positions on opposite sides of the road and pelted stones and bricks at each other. Chases and counter-chases were ongoing at the time of reporting, leaving the entire area under tense security conditions.
