The High Court has ordered ‘Grameen Kalyan’, a social business enterprise founded by Professor Muhammad Yunus, former Chief Adviser to the interim government, to pay BDT 666 crore in income tax claimed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
On Thursday (September 10, 2026), a High Court bench led by Justice Md. Mozibur Rahman Miah delivered the high-profile verdict after discharging the rule previously issued regarding this matter.
Grameen Kalyan filed a writ petition in the High Court in 2017 challenging the validity of the NBR’s revenue demand. Following initial hearings, the court issued a rule at that time. Today, the newly constituted High Court bench discharged the rule, upholding the National Board of Revenue’s tax claim as lawful.
Notably, while Professor Yunus served as Chief Adviser, reports circulated claiming the tax waiver and withdrawal of cases on behalf of Grameen Kalyan. However, on July 14, 2026, the organization’s lawyer, Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun, dismissed those reports as “base-less and misleading.” Today’s final judgment by the High Court firmly establishes the legal basis for the collection of the outstanding revenue.
