While Brazil’s tour of India was confirmed earlier, speculation remained regarding their opponents. Turning all rumors into reality, five-time world champions Brazil are set to take on host India for the first time—marking an unprecedented and historic chapter in Indian football history.
The high-voltage international friendly will take place on October 3 at the iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Kolkata. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) officially announced the schedule for this blockbuster fixture on Thursday.
Since the introduction of the FIFA Rankings in 1992, Brazil will be the highest-ranked team India has ever faced in international football. The Seleção currently occupy 5th place in the FIFA World Rankings.
The All India Football Federation expressed immense excitement over this historic encounter. M. Satyanarayan, Deputy General Secretary of AIFF, stated:
“Welcoming a powerhouse like Brazil to our country is a matter of great pride. This will undoubtedly stand as an unforgettable milestone in the history of Indian football.”
Meanwhile, Subrata Paul, Team Director and former star goalkeeper of the national team, views this match as a landmark opportunity for young Indian footballers:
“For our players, this is not just another friendly match. It is a rare opportunity to test themselves against one of the best teams in world football and to dream big.”
Prior to landing in Kolkata, the Seleção will play two friendly matches against Australia on September 25 and 29. According to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and local media reports, the third and final match of Brazil’s Asian tour during the October FIFA international window will be played on the hallowed turf of Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium.
Despite Brazil’s recent exit from the Round of 16 in the World Cup, the popularity of the team among football fans remains undiminished. Kolkata’s deep-rooted passion for Brazil is evident during major tournaments, as its streets transform into a vibrant sea of yellow and green. Now, football enthusiasts across India and Kolkata eagerly await the chance to watch their favorite stars live on home soil.
