Bus fares across long-distance inter-district routes and metropolitan areas nationwide have been officially readjusted following the recent surge in fuel prices. The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges has approved a fare increase of 17 poisha per kilometer.
The decision was unanimously taken on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) during a high-level meeting held at the ministry involving government officials, transport owners, and labor union representatives.
Under the revised fare structure, an additional 17 poisha per kilometer per passenger will be added to existing rates for long-distance buses as well as city buses and minibuses operating in major metropolitan centers, including Dhaka and Chattogram.
Speaking to journalists following the meeting, labor leader and Member of Parliament Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas noted that transport owner associations initially proposed a 20-poisha per kilometer increase. However, taking public interest into consideration, the rate was reduced by 3 poisha to settle at 17 poisha.
“Given the fuel price increase of Tk 20 per liter, adjusting bus fares became unavoidable,” he stated. “However, if any transport operator charges even one taka above the government-stipulated rate, strict legal action will be taken against the operator and the driver.”
