Police have taken Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament (MP) GM Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Khanam, into custody at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station for questioning regarding the death of his second wife, Morium Khatun (19), whose body was found hanging inside a flat at the NAM Building (MP Hostel) on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.
The matter was confirmed at around 10:00 PM on Sunday (September 20, 2026) by Ibn Mizan, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Tejgaon Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Speaking to reporters, the DMP Deputy Commissioner stated: “In the interest of revealing the truth and ensuring a fair investigation, MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksuda Khanam have been taken into police custody. We are questioning them to understand the surrounding circumstances. Detailed findings will be shared with the media upon completion of the preliminary investigation.”
Earlier at approximately 7:00 PM on Sunday, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police recovered Morium Khatun’s body found hanging from a ceiling fan inside a flat at the NAM Building. The body was subsequently sent to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Morium Khatun’s relationship with MP Gazi Nazrul became the subject of intense public scrutiny in July 2026 when several private videos involving the two were leaked on social media. Following the controversy, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party on July 22, 2026, citing a breach of organizational discipline.
