Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed is currently residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and robust diplomatic efforts are underway to bring him back to Bangladesh to face justice, stated State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir.
The State Minister disclosed this information in response to a supplementary question from NCP Member of Parliament Akhtar Hossain during the third session of the 13th National Parliament on Tuesday. Dispelling speculations that Benazir Ahmed had relocated to another country, the State Minister confirmed through the Bangladesh Embassy in Abu Dhabi that Benazir remains in the UAE. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also unaware of any movement outside the country. “Our embassy remains on alert, and a request has been conveyed to the UAE Foreign Ministry to keep him under surveillance,” the Minister added.
Acknowledging the absence of a direct extradition treaty between Bangladesh and the UAE, State Minister Humayun Kabir affirmed that diplomatic channels and pressure would be utilized continuously. Referencing allegations of violence, torture, and killings attributed to the former police chief over the past 15 years, he informed Parliament that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs—in coordination with the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Law—is actively pursuing diplomatic channels. The government remains committed to extraditing all absconding suspects to face legal proceedings.
