The assault, vandalism, and arson surrounding the eviction drive against illegal sidewalk occupation at Mirpur-10 Circle were entirely “planned,” stated Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan. Despite the violent resistance, he firmly declared that the drive to free footpaths from illegal occupation will continue unabated.
The DNCC Administrator delivered this stern warning during a press briefing after inspecting the scene on Wednesday afternoon.
The confrontation erupted on Wednesday morning (September 30, 2026) when a DNCC mobile court initiated an enforcement drive to clear unauthorized hawkers from the footpaths of Mirpur-10 Circle:
Assault and Arson: Tensions escalated rapidly as illegal vendors became agitated. Protesters attacked DNCC vehicles and several public conveyances along the thoroughfare, smashing windows and setting vehicles on fire.
Injuries to Police and Journalists: Dozens of individuals—including DNCC officials, law enforcement personnel, and journalists covering the event—sustained injuries from hurled brickbats and physical assaults.
DNCC Administrator’s Statement
Speaking during his site inspection, DNCC Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan emphasized:
“The mobile court was deployed this morning as part of our routine drives to clear public footpaths. The assault, vandalism, and arson that transpired were not spontaneous outbursts—they were part of a calculated plot. Perpetrators and instigators will be identified via CCTV footage and swiftly brought to justice. Intimidation will not derail our efforts to end footpath anarchy; this eviction drive will proceed as planned.”
