In line with the implementation of Bangladesh Bank’s “One Nation, One QR” policy, the country has achieved significant success in cashless transactions. Following the central bank’s directive in July requiring all banks and MFS providers to replace proprietary QR codes with a unified “Bangla QR,” daily transaction volume has surpassed BDT 110 crore.
Simultaneously, the number of merchants accepting Bangla QR payments has expanded from 1.6 million to nearly 3 million nationwide.
Strategic Policy Impact & Key Advantages
Unified QR Infrastructure: Effective July 1, all financial institutions were mandated to discontinue proprietary QR codes in favor of the standardized Bangla QR network.
Interoperable Payments: Customers can settle merchant bills using any banking application or Mobile Financial Services (MFS) wallet (such as bKash, Nagad, or Rocket) via a single QR code.
Merchant Convenience: Micro and retail merchants no longer need multiple POS machines or separate QR display cards for different payment networks.
Financial Inclusion: The initiative strengthens the digital financial ecosystem by integrating small-scale and informal retailers into the formal digital economy.
