The Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Md. Mostakur Rahman, has called on New Delhi to scale up imports from Bangladesh in order to narrow the substantial bilateral trade deficit currently existing between India and Bangladesh.
The request was made on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) during a courtesy meeting between the Governor and the newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, at the Bangladesh Bank headquarters in Dhaka.
According to a press release issued by the central bank, high-level officials from both sides exchanged views on concrete measures to strengthen economic, commercial, and financial cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
In addition to stressing the necessity of correcting trade imbalances, Governor Rahman expressed strong interest in expanding the usage of ‘Bangla QR’ for cross-border digital transactions. He sought India’s technical expertise and cooperation in leveraging digital payment frameworks.
Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi highlighted the importance of streamlining foreign investment procedures in Bangladesh. In response, Governor Rahman assured that the central bank has implemented key policy reforms to make the domestic market more investor-friendly, specifically enabling foreign investors to repatriate their invested capital and earned profits with greater ease. He also urged increased Indian investment across Bangladesh’s technology, manufacturing, and industrial sectors.
The meeting was attended by Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Kumar, Second Secretary (Economic & Commerce) Gaurav Kumar Agrawal, alongside Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governors Md. Habibur Rahman and Md. Saroar Hossain.
