French authorities have imposed night curfews in designated zones across Paris and several major cities following a weekend of severe rioting, vandalism, and widespread looting, BBC reported. The strict restrictions took effect on Monday night (October 19, 2026).
The decision follows nationwide demonstrations involving an estimated 550,000 citizens protesting rising energy costs, mounting inflation, and declining public services.
Curfew Scope and Restricted Zones: In Paris, a night curfew is in effect from 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM local time in high-density areas, including Place de la République and Les Halles. Partial curfews, movement restrictions on youths, and bans on public gatherings have also been enforced in Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, Lyon, and Lille.
Casualties and Mass Arrests: Law enforcement agencies have arrested over 2,500 individuals nationwide. During crowd-control operations involving tear gas and stun grenades, a protester suffered a severe hand amputation when a grenade detonated nearby. Additionally, approximately 1,000 police officers have been injured in clashes.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s Declaration: French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that local mayors have been empowered to adjust or institute curfew hours based on regional security assessments. While the central government will allocate state funds for municipal reconstruction, financial compensation will be recovered directly from individuals convicted of rioting. Financial support packages will also be provided to workers unable to attend their jobs due to public disruption.
Underlying Drivers of Unrest: While over half a million citizens initially mobilized over the cost-of-living crisis, rising fuel prices, and deteriorating educational infrastructure, fringe elements exploited the rallies to torch vehicles, damage property, and loot commercial establishments.
