China has firmly opposed the United States’ strategy of maximum pressure and economic sanctions against Iran, asserting that coercive measures will not resolve conflicts in the Middle East. The response came after US President Donald Trump announced plans for an “Economic D-Day” targeting Iran’s economy and warned of financial penalties for nations assisting Tehran.
Beijing urged all involved parties to remain responsible and prioritize political and diplomatic dialogues over unilateral sanctions.
During a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded to US threats by reiterating that “sanctions and pressure will not play a positive role in resolving any problem.” China emphasized that its bilateral trade and economic relations with Iran comply with international norms and cautioned against third-party interference.
While US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged Beijing to participate in the economic pressure campaign against Tehran, China maintained its firm opposition to illegal unilateral sanctions, advocating instead for de-escalation and structured multilateral talks.
